Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to question certain calls from the official, echoing the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
