Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue
Each time a major honors show approaches, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything that year
- A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for many years.
The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
