European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
