Donald Trump's Regime of Punishment and Favor

Trump's insatiable appetite for revenge has rapidly evolved into a methodical system. During the twelve months, the chief executive's anger and impulses have assumed the form of administrative measures in ways reminiscent to earlier dictatorial regimes. Federal personnel who do not cooperate are immediately removed and substituted by devotees. Political officials who challenge him encounter prosecution, judicial process and penalties. Opponents have been categorized under administration directives as “unpatriotic”, “against faith communities” and “anti-capitalist”, and menaced with prosecution as “terrorists”.

Federal Agencies Remade

Every instance involving prosecution of political opponents and protection for supporters displays its own unique qualities. But, despite their specific character, they exemplify examples of what has developed as a deliberate method. Such events are not random. His cleansing of Department of Justice attorneys and law enforcement officials, coupled with his placement of loyalists in high-level posts, began rapidly, soon developed a pattern, and has now been formed into a system. DoJ and the Federal Bureau have been restructured into partisan agencies under Trump's direct orders to execute his directives. Wrongdoing has been turned into standard. It represents the system of punishment.

Administration is focused with punishing the chief's perceived opponents than they are with defending our country's safety.

Inside the System

The beginnings of this framework has been revealed in the lawsuit of several former top Federal Bureau executives submitted in September in the federal court in Washington against top official an administration figure and attorney general another official for unlawful firing in “a campaign of payback against them for what Defendants considered to be a refusal to exhibit adequate devotion”. According to the filing that a former acting director, the ex- interim leader, recounts a conversation in which Patel “freely admitted the unlawfulness of his conduct”.

He had sought to shield law enforcement officers from being fired, the filing states. The director informed him that “White House figures” – perceived by him to be the presidential administration and justice department – had directed him to remove anyone who they identified as having worked on a law enforcement case against the president. The filing adds: “The director clarified that he had to terminate the individuals his bosses told him to dismiss, because his capacity to hold his own job was contingent on the ouster of the agents who worked on investigations involving the President. The director noted that there was no option he or Driscoll could do to prevent these or any other dismissals, because ‘the FBI attempted to put the chief in detention and he hasn't forgotten it.’” Once he told the director he was disregarding the bureau's own internal rules, Patel supposedly said “he recognized that and he realized the essence of the summary firings were likely illegal”.

Extensive Impact

After Patel's reported acknowledgment to Driscoll, the Department of Justice and the FBI have been dismantled and repurposed for his retribution system. Multiple of the FBI's high-ranking agents were fired or pushed out in the early weeks of the presidency. Roughly 4,500 professional attorneys at the justice department have accepted a “deferred resignation program”. No fewer than multiple federal prosecutors, among them those in the New York office, resigned in objection over what they regarded as political interference in withdrawing the corruption case against the city leader, Eric Adams, in return for his assistance with the administration's Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests of migrants. The ethics division of the department, which handles misconduct investigations, has been diminished to a handful of lawyers. The equality section has been devastated: 70% of its personnel has left. A third of executives at DoJ have quit. The division upholding environmental law has seen departures of a majority its supervisors.

Incentives and Punishments

In the legal matter, the temporary lawyer for the southern district of New York, she, stepped down in objection against what she described as the “exchange”. The border official, the president's “immigration leader,” was present as the implementer with the mayor on television to announce: “If he doesn't come through, I'll reappear in New York City.”. And, Emil Bove, formerly the acting deputy attorney general and a past legal representative, who arranged the agreement, was awarded an court role, a possible pathway to the highest court.

The president's protection for crimes committed while in government, granted by the remarkable decision of the GOP-led on the highest court, thus thwarting his prosecution over the political violence and preserving his public standing for the presidential race, is the foundation stone on which he relies to shield his supporters. Under these circumstances, he has been empowered to enable corruption. The consequence of the judicial ruling saturates his presidency and the Republican Party completely. The legal case has metastasized. Similar to Richard Nixon's White House counsel he commented about the Watergate
